# Wrist temperature and early signs your body needs rest

Canonical: https://getearlysignal.app/en/guides/wrist-temperature-and-getting-sick

> How overnight wrist temperature from Apple Watch can flag a personal rise—and what that does and does not mean.

## In short

Overnight wrist temperature can rise above your personal baseline when your body is under strain. Apple Watch Series 8 and later records sleeping wrist temperature. Early Signal treats a sustained personal rise as a lead signal among five biometrics and uses it to suggest low-risk rest actions. It never names a disease and is not medical advice.

## What the Watch actually measures

Apple Watch Series 8 and later, and Apple Watch Ultra, can estimate wrist temperature changes during sleep and write them to Apple Health. The useful number for wellness apps is the change from your own nights—not an absolute clinical thermometer reading. Early Signal shows temperature only as a deviation from your baseline.

## Why temperature leads

Among common Watch metrics, overnight temperature and breathing rate are stronger strain differentiators than HRV or sleep alone. Early Signal weights them higher when present, then looks for agreement with heart and sleep signals before escalating to Off from usual.

## What a rise does not mean

A warmer night can follow alcohol, late exercise, a hot room, cycle phase, or simply incomplete data. A rest-day heads-up is not a diagnosis; in-app status says Typical, Slightly off, or Off from usual. Seek care for concerning symptoms regardless of what the app shows.

## Guide FAQ

### Do I need Series 8+?

For wrist temperature, yes—Series 8 or later, or any Apple Watch Ultra. Without it, Temp is omitted from the ring with a Series 8+ footnote. Early Signal still works on HRV, resting heart rate, respiratory rate (Series 3+), and sleep. Missing metrics never look in range.

### Is this a fever detector?

No. The app does not display clinical fever thresholds or diagnose fever. It compares overnight wrist temperature to your own median baseline.
