# HRV drops and a rest-day heads-up—what wearables can show

Canonical: https://getearlysignal.app/en/guides/hrv-drop-before-illness

> Heart rate variability often falls when stress load rises. Here is how Early Signal uses HRV as support—not a solo trigger.

## In short

Heart rate variability (HRV) often declines when your autonomic nervous system is under load—from training, stress, poor sleep, or feeling run down. Early Signal compares overnight HRV to your personal robust baseline and treats it as a supporting signal alongside temperature, breathing, resting heart rate, and sleep. An HRV drop alone is never a diagnosis and is not medical advice.

## What HRV is in Apple Health

Apple Watch typically stores overnight HRV as SDNN samples. Early Signal aggregates those nights and builds a median/MAD baseline so one noisy night does not redefine normal.

## Support, not a solo trigger

A single HRV dip can mean many things. The scoring engine looks for weighted agreement across signals. Temperature and breathing lead when available; HRV and resting heart rate support; sleep adds context.

## Keeping alerts rare

Off from usual notifications are capped and conservative. You will still see morning status in-app even when a push is held back by cooldown or lifestyle context (Explained by context for generic, non temperature-led patterns).

## Guide FAQ

### Is low HRV always bad?

No. Absolute HRV varies widely between people. What matters for Early Signal is a drop relative to your own usual range—and whether other signals agree.
