# Breathing rate as an early rest-day signal from Apple Watch

> Respiratory rate during sleep can shift when your body is under strain. How Early Signal uses it.

## In short

Overnight respiratory rate can rise when your body is under strain. Apple Watch (Series 3 and later, with Health permissions) can store breathing rate samples. Early Signal treats a personal rise as a lead signal with wrist temperature—and still requires careful multi-signal agreement before Off from usual.

## Where the data comes from

With Health access, Early Signal reads respiratory rate samples and aggregates overnight values into a daily metric. Baselines use the same robust median/MAD approach as other signals.

## Lead role with temperature

Breathing and wrist temperature are the strain differentiators in the five-signal set. When both move with heart signals, confidence rises. When a Watch has never recorded wrist temperature, Temp is omitted from the ring. Missing breathing data never looks in range.

## Stay out of diagnosis territory

Elevated breathing rate has many causes. The app does not diagnose or treat disease and is not medical advice. It flags unusual patterns for you and suggests low-risk rest actions.

## Guide FAQ

### Which Watch models support respiratory rate?

Respiratory rate in Health is available from Apple Watch Series 3 onward when the Watch can sample overnight. Wrist temperature still needs Series 8 or later, or any Ultra.
