# Early Signal and WHOOP

Canonical: https://getearlysignal.app/en/alternatives/whoop

> WHOOP Recovery is a daily readiness score for strain. Early Signal is a rare wellness status from Apple Watch nights.

## In short

WHOOP Recovery is a daily 0–100 readiness score from a WHOOP band, built from overnight HRV, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, and sleep, and shown as green, yellow, or red. Skin temperature and blood oxygen are part of WHOOP’s Health Monitor on newer hardware. Early Signal is not a training score. It is an on-device Apple Watch status—Typical, Slightly off, or Off from usual—with temperature and breathing in the lead. No prices or rankings here.

## What Recovery is for

WHOOP describes Recovery as how prepared your body is to take on strain, calculated after sleep. HRV, resting heart rate, respiratory rate, and sleep are the inputs WHOOP highlights, compared with your own baseline rather than a universal good number. Green, yellow, and red are readiness buckets, not a disease label.

## Temperature and strain context

WHOOP says skin temperature and blood oxygen live in Health Monitor and can add context when you may feel run down, on hardware that supports them (WHOOP documents skin temperature on WHOOP 4.0 recovery data). That is a different product surface from the daily Recovery percentage. Early Signal puts sleeping wrist temperature and breathing in the lead when the Watch has them, and will not show a missing metric as in range.

## Watch versus band

WHOOP is its own band. Early Signal uses the Apple Watch you already wear and keeps scoring on the iPhone. It does not produce a 0–100 strain or recovery score, and it caps Off from usual notifications. Neither product should be read as a diagnosis.

## Guide FAQ

### Does Early Signal replace a training coach?

No. It does not prescribe workouts or a strain target. It flags an unusual overnight pattern for you.

### Does WHOOP use Apple Watch?

WHOOP Recovery comes from the WHOOP band, not from Apple Health. Early Signal does the reverse: Apple Watch in, no extra band.
